About Möu Möu.
* Möu like moo.
Möu Möu was born in the summer of 2020, (yes she’s a lockdown baby), but not the Möu Möu that we know and love today. Being furloughed from my job in Buying at Topshop gave me my creative spark back and I began making and selling tie dyed face masks and matching scrunchies, (like, literally couldn’t be any more 2020). It blew up, and when I got the opportunity to take redundancy from Topshop I put myself forward immediately. From there Möu Möu evolved into hand painted candles, custom painted baubles and Christmas wreaths. I hosted my first supper club, sold at makers markets, hosted workshops and pop ups and began to grow a little community.
By the end of 2021 I was struggling. I’d had enough of painting Christmas gifts and I was feeling the pressure of constantly having to think of new products to create and sell. The joy was gone. At the end of January 2022, after watching a hell of a lot of Junior Bake Off alongside a growing obsession with cake decorating videos on Instagram, (shout out to April’s Baker for the free therapy), I made my first cake for my Granny’s birthday. Not first cake ever, (the real ones will remember the rainbow cake era of 2011/12), but my first “posh” cake.
I trotted down to Wilko and bought a turntable, pallet knife and a piping kit for about a tenner and aimed high with a vanilla chiffon sponge filled with fresh cream, raspberries and decorated with Swiss meringue buttercream. It was DELICIOUS. After that all of my friends got a cake for their birthday, and when I finally made one to a fairly decent standard, I broke my hiatus and returned to Instagram with a picture of the cake and tongue in cheek caption “So she’s a baker now”. The crowd went wild.
After that people started PAYING ME to make cakes, imagine?! I had absolutely zero intention of becoming a baker, it really did just happen, but I’m so grateful that I found that little corner of the internet and managed to teach myself a new skill.
I’d always had dreams of becoming a florist, and had dipped my toe into the world of wedding flowers already, but I could never have predicted that I’d end up combining these two self taught skills into a new, albeit very niche, job. It’s allowed me to be constantly creative in a completely new way, and removed me from a dry, creatively stifled, corporate world where I never fitted in.
Möu Möu truly is an extension of me and my messy creative brain, so to all of you who get it, to the ones who come back for cakes without fail, for trusting me and letting me be a tiny part of your most special occasions - thank you for being part of my silly little world, it means the most!
